Alexievich's distinctive documentary style, combining extended individual monologues with a collage of voices, records the stories of ordinary women and men who are rarely given the opportunity to speak, whose experiences are often lost in the official histories of the nation. When the Swedish Academy awarded Svetlana Alexievich the Nobel Prize, it cited her for inventing "a new kind of literary genre", describing her work as "a history of emotions - a history of the soul". A man who indulges in the ideas of others and casts his own aside is a fool a man who understands the ideas of others and procures his own as a result is truly wise. This represents firmly Thoreau’s beliefs on conformity. Thoreau also writes, “He who gives himself entirely to his fellow-men appears to them useless and selfish but he who gives himself partially to them is pronounced a benefactor and philanthropist” (Thoreau 670). Sitting around and simply saying you are against something is nearly as bad as partaking in it. If we do not support the present war, put the flags away. If we are opposed to animal cruelty, stop eating fast food. Accordingly, we must take a stand in something in order to disagree with it. However, he states, “Even voting for the right is doing nothing for it” (Thoreau 673). Thoreau believes that each man should stand up for his beliefs in a passive way. Then again, perhaps this is an ideal hope. If your morals and beliefs are so strong, you should have no problem opposing a figure that requires you to go against them. ![]() That is, to what level is your personal integrity? Of course everyone opposes some of the things they are asked to do, but still end up doing them. This seems to be a question with another inquiry hidden within it. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Now moving on to characters, now by this time you all might know how much I love Alice Oseman and one of the main reasons for that is how come she creates such likeable and realistic characters everytime! The book explores the theme of fandom, idolization, fame, way we treat our idols, friendship, importance of friendship, layers of friendship, mental health, alcoholism, LGBTQIAP+ representation. The story follows as what happens when both of their world collide.ĭon't think it's a romance book. Īnd we have Jimmy Ricia, front man of The Arc band, who is currently going to a tough phase in his life managing himself between all this fame, new contract, loads of work and of course his mental health. It has already qualified as my favourite y/a fiction of all time. This book hit a bit too close to me, like if I say it's probably going to be one of my favourite books it's going to be a bit of understatement. Right now I am anything but calm plus I have been crying for an hour thinking about this book, "my boys" and everything I have put my heart in for them! ![]() ![]() ![]() If this series was meant to elaborate on their history and introduce them for a newer audience, I’m not sure that was accomplished. There are a couple of rumors floating around that there might be a Eternals movie, which if true would end up seeming like Marvel is trying to play catch up with DC on announcing a New Gods movie. The Eternals were originally a group of Jack Kirby characters (I know you could tell that by just looking at their outfits, but it needed to be said for posterity’s sake) who were creations of the Celestials made to protect Earth millions of years before present day. ![]() Admittedly, the Eternals are a part of Marvel I never fully understood, and I can’t say that after reading this I understand much more. ![]() ![]() ![]() I recommend it for those readers who love dragons, spell casters and wizards, demon kings and beautifully, exotic women who sing like angels or are prey to visions of what may or may not come to be. ![]() Seer – Patrick O’Scheen’s second book in the Chronicles of Marithe is an exciting, page-turning read. Instead, each club chose to place their season in a holding pattern or worse. Each chairman in question has talked a good game, speaking about the importance of making the right appointment. Rather than building on Rodgers’ good work, the club appointed a man most recently seen taking Norwich City down before getting sacked in the Championship.
